But it shows you people here, "resiliency said Toms, who was in his home in Shreveport when Katrina hit, and played in the Zurich classic when oil rig exploded. "The French quarter is live. "I am not kidding anybody. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel here. I just enjoy golf to the point that I want to test my ability to optimize to see what my best can be, "said Smoltz, 43, in an interview from the phone. "I have an imaginary world in which I am not afraid of how it looks in the end, or fault part of it, or what people think. Each week USA TODAY will roll out a new product in the world of golf. This week we take a look at some of the hottest golf apps.

Paul Azinger's golf app, Golf Plan. Golf Plan

Paul Azinger's golf app, Golf Plan.

Golf Plan

Paul Azinger's golf app, Golf Plan.

Paul Azinger was sitting in the broadcast booth at last year's Open Championship at the Old Course in St. Andrews when he got the signal he'd be describing an upcoming shot.

Azinger, a 12-time winner on the PGA Tour and Captain America for the victorious 2008 Ryder Cup squad, looked at the monitor and wanted to know exactly how far the player's approach shot to the green would be.

So he pulled out his iPhone and called up a golf app.

"With the GolfShot GPS, to have 37,000 golf courses in the palm of your hand, to have all the yardages you need, is amazing to me," Azinger said. "Right there in the booth I knew everything. You can be sitting there watching the Masters and pull up Golf Shot and know all the yardages a player has, to the hole, to the back bunker, to the front of the green. You can see arial photos of the golf holes."

Azinger hooked up with the creators of GolfPlan and developed GolfShot, another golf app chalk full of instructional videos. These two apps are among the hundreds now available for golfers everywhere, most compatible with the iPhone, iPad, iTouch and Android.

"You get game improvement right in the palm of your hand," Azinger said. "You're not going to take a magazine to the driving range. You don't have to carry some 10-pound video recorder anymore. The cellphone is always with you and you can get instruction instantly. And with apps, all you do is touch a button and, boom, you're getting a lesson, or getting a yardage, or finding a tee time."

Here are some other good golf apps:

Azinger developed a practice plan that can be tailored specifically to your game, with more than 80 drill-based instructional videos. Using data from thousands of users allows the app to identify tendencies in various handicap ranges. The app will then create a practice plan based on your weaknesses — a three-day plan, a six-day plan, a 12-day plan — with drills for your handicap level. Twenty-six PGA Tour veterans join Azinger in the uncomplicated video lessons for any handicap level, which can be performed on the driving range, golf course and at home. Golf Plan also will be taking the game indoors, with 30-40 drills that can be used in your home or office, with or without a golf club. Visit http://golfplanpro.com/. Compatible for iPhone, iPad and Android via iTunes, App Store or Android Market.

Convenient and functional, the V1 Golf app allows golfers to capture and analyze their golf swing on video-camera enabled smart phones or tablet mobile devices. The friendly user-interface and icon buttons let users get started quickly after downloading the app. Users can easily record and playback their swing and use one of the several drawing tools to analyze their work, in both vertical and landscape views. Split-screen comparisons and a library of top Tour players to compare your swing to also are available. A library of game improvement video drills from PGA professionals is included. Available for both Apple and Android mobile devices. Learn more at www.v1golfapp.com.

PGA Tour pro Kevin Streelman helps players of all stripes with easy-to-follow tips on the proper way to approach any golf shot. A slow-motion HD video option is available. Streelman offers more than 50 tips, from how to handle first-tee jitters to how to handle a long bunker shot to how to handle a three-foot putt. Compatible to iPhone, iTouch, and iPad via the iTunes or App Store.

iStimp

Now you can have a Stimpmeter — that angled track that releases a golf ball at a known velocity so that the distance it rolls on a green's surface can be measured — at the touch of your fingers. Using an accelerometer and complex algorithms to work out the stimp reading, iStimp can compare the speed of the greens on a new course with your home course to improve your putting, or use it to compare different greens on the course to check the consistency. You also can store stimp readings to review at a later time. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

Need a proper ruling? Want to keep track of the U.S. Open? Here is the app for you. Luke Donald, watching his tee shot on the second hole, shot 1-under 70 Saturday to take a one-shot lead into Sunday's final round.

Donald shot 1-under 70 on Saturday, taking a one-stroke leader over defending champion Jim Furyk (FSY) after three rounds at Harbour Town Golf Links. A victory would Vault Donald third-ranked No 1. Donald knows if he is thinking too much about which to lose sight of the stellar tries to hunt him. "I think it's a bunch of people behind us who have a good chance, even so I don't expect anyone else out, "he said. "There should be a good struggle out there."It is usually with Donald and Furyk. Furyk, American ranked 13th in the world, used the same save from the bunker on the 72nd hole to win the Tour Championship by a stroke over Donald last year and claimed the $ 10 million FedEx Cup bonus.Donald came right back the next week beating Furyk 1-up in Ryder Cup singles in Europe's victory. "I got a little revenge, "he said. This time the price of Donald would be twice: his first season with multiple victories on the PGA Tour and the height to the No. 1 in the world. There were seven of the world's top 20 players here this week, a field that is strong enough to push Donald previously inactive No.1 Martin Kaymer (FSY) and no. 2 Lee Westwood (FSY).Westwood would take up the place with a victory at the Indonesian Masters, where he holds a five-stroke lead, Donald falter. The two Englishmen exchanged messages about their play. "Yea, he sent me a message yesterday, just say, "Good plays," and I sent one back, "Donald said. "We are obviously the Ryder Cup partner and we are friends of course. We would never bad about each other. "Donald let some early nerves visible by hitting his approach to the par-5 second hole left of the border, leading to a double-bogey 7 that released him from the leadership. But Donald steeled himself with two solid par save on the third and fourth holes when his iron play was shaky. He was in the rough into a trap on the par-4 third, but chipped to 6 feet for par. When was Donald well right of the green on the par-3 Fourth. Again, he saved himself with the short game, chipping inside of 2 metres.Donald regained its momentum on the par-5 fifth with a 12-footer for birdie. "These up-and-downs and to keep some momentum going where I did not go wholly back was huge for me, "said Brendon de Jonge, Donald b. (FSY) (66) and Scott Verplank (FSY) (67) was two shots behind 9. Masters runner-up Jason Day (FSY) (71), Ricky Barnes (FSY) (67) and Tommy Gainey (FSY) (67) were 8 under.Furyk was held at the head of a large portion of the back nine at Harbour town Golf Links, but bogeyed the CLOSING Lighthouse hole for a 69 to fall back.Donald, who won the Match Play Championship and was fourth at the masters, called the steady, focused style that made him one of the world's best to move back to the top with birdies on the fifth and seventh holes. Donald has put his approach at the 16th hole 3 feet for his final birdie to reach 11 under.Furyk had his chance to retain some of the lead, but sent his second shot on the 18th hole into a bunker behind the Green, and could not make a 16-footer for par after blasting out.Furyk and Donald will be paired in the final group Sunday for what sets up as an amazing finish in what could be the final legacy. A stand that the PGA Tour since 1969, the tournament is without a title sponsor, tour and event leader says is necessary to return in 2012. "Both have become the port city of masters, combine 14 rounds in the 1960s during the last three tournaments."I think I'm there, I, and when I play well I think this Golf course really suits my game, "said Furyk.

Eventually he did, beating Luke Donald (FSY) in a playoff Sunday and deny the Englishman a chance at no. 1. "It was brutal, "Snedeker of his time in television."I do not want them doing bad, but I don't want them to be great, either. "Finally had the big Finish, Snedeker survivors against one of the world's best playoff hole for his substance three second career PGA Tour win and first since the 2007 Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., in his first season."To win this time, after all the hard work I put in the last three or four years, trying to improve, try to get better, "he said. "I think my game is finally."It was really the Harbour Town Golf Links, birdied seven of the Snedeker his first 12 holes to take the lead as the last couple Donald and defending champion Jim Furyk (FSY) teed off. Then Snedeker finished the final round with a 12-foot birdie putt on the signing, closing Lighthouse hole at no 18. "It's a storybook ending really, played Luke in a playoff, to even have a chance to win was exciting for me, "he said.Donald could have risen to the top spot in the world from No. 3 had he won. His compatriot, Lee Westwood (FSY), moved from No. 2 No. 1, replacing Martin Kaymer (FSY), after having won the Indonesian Masters earlier Sunday rescued the pair from. Donald more difficult spots on the 71st and 72nd hole to force the playoff and then did it again on the second extra hole. But his luck ran out at Harbour Town Golf Links ' closing Lighthouse hole, no. 18, when he received a partially buried lie in a front bunker.Donald blasted out about 15 feet from the flag and his chip for par from just outside the Greens fought back edge of the Cup and sent to give Snedeker victory.Snedeker said he was more concerned about getting to New Orleans for next week's event when he woke up Sunday than fighting for the title Sunday, Tommy Gainey (FSY) finished a stroke back after a 68. Donald was the steadiest player most of the week at Harbour Town. He had birdies on the fourth and fifth holes to get to 13 under, but dropped back after bogeys at the seventh and 10th holes. He caught Snedeker with a birdie on no. 13, then parred his way in for the match. "There would be some great rewards if I won today, "said Donald. -But I'll try to find positive from this week, and move on.At least Donald datasheet No 1 somehow, doing $ 615,000 to the top of the PGA Tour money list. This was going to come to a final-round duel between the final third-round leader Donald and Furyk, who was only a stroke behind at the beginning, until the Snedekers run. "Kind of came out of nowhere, "said Snedeker. Donald kept him safe on the edge of the seat. After the last birdie in regulation Donalds missed makable birdie tries he in the 15th and 16th holes. Donald then looked as if he would shoot himself of it, sending his tee shot on the par-3 and 17 of the back, then landed his approach to the bunker at no. 18. Both times Donald chipped within 4 feet to save par.Snedeker and Donald traded birdies on the first extra hole, the 18th, and pars on the other, the 17th green at Snedeker. hit the last hole playoff and two putted for par to win with $1,026. The biggest issue facing Snedeker now is whether he'll be back to defend his title.Heritage is without a title sponsor, the PGA Tour and the event leader says is important for its return in 2012. There was talk throughout the week Sunday surprise announcement of a spokesperson to give guarantees to the professionals. None was forthcoming, however, and the tournament director Steve Wilmot said "sponsorship continues the search seriously."Gainey, bidding to become the first South Carolina native to win the State's PGA Tour, missed a 15-foot birdie putt on his last hole that would have put him into the match. "I would have loved to have won, "said Gainey, who gained fame as" Two gloves "Golf Channel 's" Big Break "series. "I think it is the second-best tournament on tour" behind Furyk finished Masters. his highest score, 76, his previous 33 rounds at Harbour town to fall from contention. -I was just kind of a bad roll and it snowballed on me today, "he said.Tim Herron (FSY) (67) and Ricky Barnes (FSY) (69) tied for fourth, two shots out of the playoffs.Snedeker said he confronted his former tee time that fueled his hot beginning softer conditions. He had birdies at the second, third and fourth holes to move within two of lead, which was no. 6, 7 and 9 to the front page at 30 birdies and put itself together with Donald on the leaderboard.Things weren't so easy for Snedeker on the back. He bogeyed the 13th and 16th holes but rallied one last time with a birdie on the difficult 18th., when it was over, he shook hands with Donald and told him to keep his chin. "I just told him he will be no. 1. Is it not go in the right way for him, "said Snedeker.Divots: Ian Poulter (FSY), 16th in the world this week, struggled on the weekend with a 75-71, after 7, under the first two rounds. The problem was perhaps supernatural. Poulter tweeted several times that he believed that the House was he during this week was haunted. Poulter says Parliament had a dead-bolted door and every time he gets back, "the door is unlocked, open." He says that it happened seven times a week. Frightening. ... "No, I do not feel any more pressure to make birdies, "laughed Furyk, who made a two-foot putt on the last hole at East Lake last year to win the Tour Championship, FedExCup and $ 10 million. "I see it as an opportunity and it'll be fun. I will just go out and play as I can and know that something positive will come out of playing golf-it is an excellent program. And when someone promises, all this money will stay in the nearest network hospital.Furyk, 40, and his wife, Tabitha, who has two children, have supported the Wolfson Children's hospital near his home in Ponte Stuttgart Beach, Fla., two have seen first hand the critical work at Wolfsons and other children's network hospitals. As has been the type of the last few years where I have had a slow start on the West Coast, "said Furyk, who has five top-10s in his last seven heritage starts. "With the new schedule with the FedExCup, I have a lot of time off during autumn and winter. I have taken three or four months at the same time. And to be honest with you, I have done a poor job in preparing for the season.I have come out rusty and I have had to play my way into shape. But as we were in March, I felt pretty good about my game. I feel good about my game right now. And I love coming here. I love the course, I love the island ".It has really been feast or famine for me here. I have had very good finish, but I have missed much downsizing. It is the kind of golf course. If not you, is it really difficult to get around this golf course. When I play good, even if it benefits my style in the game. "Last time? Heritage played in years without a sponsor. Next year, it may not be played at all. But Furyk said he has seen very positive about the future of the event, and hope that a sponsor or sponsors can take out the 8 million dollars a year to play the event. "I would be sad," if it was the last heritage, Furyk said. "I have spoken with the tour and the Tournament Director, had we all statesmen, Mayor. There was a Congressman here to open the ceremonies. And everyone seems very positive. I know that they work together and are working very hard to find a sponsor. I do not know exactly what is or what you really find faults in the area or the golf course. This island, this area is a wonderful place to entertain people. So hopefully they'll get it done.
